Terry Jenkins
Born : Dowlais

I started at Cyfarthfa Castle School in 1945 and played lots of rugby and cricket for the school. I left in 1952 to go to Cardiff University and gained a BSc in pure metallurgy, being top of my year. I played rugby and cricket for the University 1st teams, getting my colours at cricket. I started work at the AWRE Aldermaston in 1955 and worked there until May 31st 2004 with a break of 30months when I was advising the Jamaican Government and Industry. Whilst there I played rugby for Kingston and Jamaica. I played both rugby and cricket for AWRE (AWE) for many years. We have 5 children, 4 grandchildren, and one great grandson, and celebrated our Golden Wedding in 2006.

I left Cardiff University in 1955 and started work at the Atomic Weapons research Establishment at Aldermaston. The work was highly classified, starting with the manufacture of weapon parts in plutonium and uranium. In 1970 I went to Jamaica for 30 months to advise Government and Industry and set up a bureau of standards. I did many investigations of fatal accidents and saved several £K. In 1975 I was appointed to a senior position as manager of a large facility making radioactive parts for underground tests in Nevada and for the UK Military, initially the RAF and later the Royal Navy. In July 1979 I conducted the Queen on a tour of the facility. In 1998 I was 'borrowed' by the USA Dept of Energy to advise them on the manufacture of nuclear weapon parts at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Now this was initially for 2 years, but ended up at 6 yrs.
During this time I made significant improvements to the safety of their operations and advised on the design of a future manufacturing facility. I left the USA in May 2004 for a belated retirement at 70. In May 1997 I was asked to visit Iraq as a United Nations Nuclear Weapons Inspector.
